Undergraduate students have opportunities to conduct research with faculty mentors during their
four years at the university. Some Native students participate in the Cornell Presidential Research
Scholars program. Other students take advantage of programs such as Cornell in Washington; the Rome
Program in Architecture, Art, and Planning; and Study Abroad.
Cornell University recently acquired the Huntington Free Library's Native American collection,
one of the largest in the world. The collection contains more than 40,000 volumes on the
archaeology, ethnology, and history of the Native peoples of the Americas, from the colonial period
to the present. "The collection provides enormously rich materials for teaching and research and
will enable us to attract outstanding scholars from across the hemispheres," says Jane Mt. Pleasant,
director of the American Indian Program. "Student opportunities to conduct original research with
primary documents will be unprecedented."
