Life at Akwe:kon

Akwe:kon is the American Indian center on campus where student organizations meet, New York state tribes and other Native communities are hosted at Cornell, credit courses are taught, and the Akwe:kon Press office is located. Akwe:kon is also home to thirty five students selected to serve as community leaders and help meet Akwe:kon's goal of student support and community education.

Jointly supported by Cornell's American Indian Program and the Division of Campus Life, Akwe:kon provides a dynamic and supportive living experience for Native and other students interested in Native issues and intercultural learning. Akwe:kon's Native residents come from many nations across the United States and Canada. Its non-Native residents are also culturally and geographically diverse. All the residents share information and cultural experiences while making Akwe:kon their home on campus.

Students who live at Akwe:kon create their own stimulating, community to complement Cornell's rich academic and social life. They advance multicultural learning and exchange across the campus through programs and events, often cosponsored by the American Indian Program, and play a key role in house governance, serving on the Akwe:kon House Council and its subcommittees on house policy, recreation, Native awareness, special programs, and the selection of new house members.
